Saratoga Springs: Everyone knows about the Saratoga Race Course, but this small town just 30 minutes from Lake George has much more to offer throughout the year. It’s worth the trip for the restaurants, unique shops, and live music at Saratoga Performing Arts Center. Off the beaten path you can enjoy a free, self-guided tour of Yaddo Gardens, founded in 1900 as a place for artists to tap into their creativity in a peaceful environment. This 400-acre estate can be visited seasonally and is famous for its architecture and rose gardens.
Ticonderoga: Head to the northernmost part of Lake George to Ticonderoga to learn about some interesting history and spend the day enjoying the outdoors. Fort Ticonderoga offers lots of fun and exciting activities for the whole family, but this part of the Adirondacks features of lots of other things to do. Enjoy the lake with a ride on the Fort Ti Cable Ferry or take a hike on the LaChute River Trail. Don’t miss the fantastic view of Lake Champlain and Vermont by taking the scenic drive to the peak of Mount Defiance.
Lake Placid: This Adirondack gem is a year-round destination for vacationers and has a great downtown atmosphere close to 6.1 million acres of Adirondack Park land. Ausable Chasm in nearby Keesville is a must-see destination for outdoor enthusiasts. At the Olympic Museum in Lake Placid, you can learn more about the “Miracle on Ice” and see the iconic ski jumps.
Gore Mountain: The North Creek area is best known for the Gore Mountain Ski Resort, famous for its great skiing, hiking, and scenic gondola rides. Hop on a rail bike at Revolution Rail to pedal through the Adirondack forest on a historic railroad track. For adventure seekers, the North River is also a fantastic place to go whitewater rafting. The hardest garnet in the world is only found on Gore Mountain. Take a Garnet Mine tour to learn more and pick up some souvenirs.
